The Iowa Senate approved a gambling bill last Wednesday that could potentially legalize online poker within the state’s borders. The bill, Senate File 526, was approved, 38-12.
By December 1, the legislation asks for the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission study regulating online poker. The measure would also revise Iowa’s casino referendum laws, allow advance deposit wagering on horse races, and revise rules for online horse betting.
Supporters of the bill argue that legalizing online poker in Iowa could generate tens of millions of dollars in tax money. However, the Poker Players Alliance has stated they feel the bill wouldn’t be so good for online poker. The bill proposed, which would legalize poker games within the states borders, is said to have PPA executive director John Pappas upset, as he has stated that a better bill would be legalizing poker nationwide.
The bill now goes the House, although gambling lobbyists are optimistic that it will pass with flying colors.
